Let’s get started.

Polk Audio T50 Floor Standing Tower Speaker :

One of the best floor standing speakers you can get your hands on is the Polk Audio T50. It belongs to the T Series home theater speakers by Polk Audio which is inspired by the brand’s hugely successful Monitor Series. The T Series has two T50 floor standing speakers, two T15 bookshelf speakers and one T30 center channel speaker, all of which are designed to work as a complete 5.1 home theater system.

If you are planning on assembling your own home theater system, we suggest you get yourself the T50 speakers first. They are a good pair to start with and you can gradually build up from there. They are compatible with most home theater receivers, processors and stereos. They support Dolby and DTS, two of the latest sound formats in home theater audio.

For your initial set-up, the T50s can function as stereo speakers. You can place them on either side of the TV screen, aiming them at the listening position. The slender design ensures they don’t take up much space and the integrated support base affords steady floor placement.

Each T50 tower speaker is equipped with one 1-inch silk dome tweeter, one 6 ½ inch extended throw composite mid/woofer driver and two 6 ½ inch performance-tuned front-firing sub-bass radiators. All the drivers are crafted with Polk’s inhouse Dynamic Balance technology. This technology lowers distortion and generates a wider response. It enables the speakers to produce soaring highs, uncolored mids and ground-shaking bass. The drivers are wide-dispersion in design so that the sound waves travel far and wide. No matter where you are in the room, you hear clear three dimensional audio that doesn’t feel restricted. Plus, the radiator elevates the effect of the woofer, making the sound warm and well-balanced.

The high-quality furniture-grade MDF enclosure minimizes resonance and rattling sounds. It is acoustically transparent meaning it does not interact with the sound waves. As a result the sound is not muffled and you get the purest, most original, sound possible.

The enclosure has a bass reflex design. It is 36.5 inches high, 9.25 inches wide and 8.75 inches deep. On the rear side is a pair of gold-plated binding posts. A removable grille covers the front face.

Peak power handling of the speaker is 150 watts. Frequency response is 38Hz to 24kHz, nominal impedance is 8 ohms to 6 ohms, and sensitivity is 90dB (1 watt @ 1 meter).

Key Features :

  • Pair of large floor standing speakers for home theater.
  • One 1-inch tweeter, one 6 ½ inch mid/woofer, two 6 ½ inch bass radiators.
  • Dynamic Balance technology, compatible with Dolby and DTS, removable grille.
  • Furniture-grade MDF bass reflex enclosure, gold-plated binding post speaker terminal.

Pioneer SP-FS52 Floor Standing Speaker :

The Pioneer SP-FS52 is designed by well-known sound equipment designer, Andrew Jones. It has an array of speakers that deliver professional-quality audio. It works as a solitary speaker, as stereo speakers in a two-channel system, and as the front left and right speakers in a multi-channel home theater system.

The speaker has a stylish curved cabinet made of molded RF. It is a 3-way bass reflex enclosure. It is specially crafted to lower internal standing waves which in turn improves efficiency of the speaker. The front side has a fabric grille. The rear side has gold-plated speaker binding posts.

The Pioneer SP-FS52 is equipped with one 1-inch soft dome tweeter and three 5.3 inch structured surface woofers. A custom-made waveguide enhances tweeter efficacy. The sweet spot is much wider and more people enjoy crystal clear audio from across different areas in the room. Plus, a high-quality 8-element complex crossover does an excellent job of splitting the audio signal into high, mid and low frequencies. Because of that the tweeter and the woofers are able to deliver pure and unadulterated high and low notes respectively.

The woofer has a structured surface and an oversized magnet. This improves rigidity and stiffness which aids bass response. In addition, there is a vented pole piece which further maximizes low end reproduction to give you a fuller sound.

The SP-FS52 has a power handling capability of 130 watts. Frequency response is 40Hz to 20kHz, impedance is 6 ohms and sensitivity is 87dB. Crossover is 250Hz to 3kHz.

Klipsch R-625FA Floor Standing Speaker :

This speaker has Dolby Atmos capability. It is one of the best floor standing tower speakers by Klipsch. It has a max power handling of 400 watts and is built with Tractrix Horn technology, a Klipsch innovation. It has a Linear Travel Suspension tweeter and Spun Copper IMG woofers that pump out mind-blowing room-filling audio. Let us take a closer look at the engineering of the R-625FA.

The Klipsch R-625FA has a built-in elevation channel for Dolby Atmos speakers. These advanced speakers fire sound at the ceiling from where it bounces off and reaches to the listener as overhead sound. You get the illusion of sound coming from above which is necessary for creating realistic effects in scenes that have overhead action. For instance if there is a helicopter hovering above a building on the TV screen, Dolby Atmos creates that exact same sound effect by sending reflected helicopter sounds from the ceiling.

For the main channel, the R-625FA has a tweeter and two woofers. It has a peak power handling of 400 watts and a continuous power handling of 100 watts. The tweeter is a 1-inch Linear Travel Suspension (LTS) aluminum tweeter mated to a 90×90 square Tractrix Horn. This technology aims high-frequency sound at the listener’s ears. It lowers artificial reverb or filtering resulting from indirect sound due to sound waves ricocheting off walls, floors and ceilings. LTS on its part also reduces distortion and enhances focus. Kapton, an exceptionally rigid and lightweight material, is used for the tweeter suspension. It makes the tweeter more efficient, and improves resolution and detail.

The woofers are 6 ½ inch in size. They have spun-copper cones made of Injection Molded Graphite (IMG). They are extremely light and rigid, which enables them to generate surprisingly deep low end response. They are also magnetically shielded, and suffer less damage and distortion.

For the height channel, the R-625FA has one 1-inch LTS aluminum tweeter mated to a 90×90 square Tractrix Horn and one 5 ¼ inch spun copper IMG woofer. It has a power handling of 75-150 watts.

The R-625FA floor standing speaker has a bass reflex enclosure with a rear-firing Tractrix port for the main channel and an acoustic suspension enclosure for the height channel. It has an aesthetically crafted cabinet with a textured scratch-tolerant wood grain vinyl finish. Each tower speaker is 40 inches tall, 9.4 inches wide and 17.3 inches deep. It has a low-profile flexible magnetic removable grille. It also has angled feet and exposed fasteners.

Key Features :

  • Dolby Atmos-ready floor standing speakers with Tractrix Horn technology.
  • Main channel: one 1-inch LTS tweeter + two 6.5 inch IMG spun-copper woofers.
  • Height channel: one 1-inch LTS tweeter + one 5.25 inch IMG spun-copper woofer.

The Yamaha NS-F210 has a 2-way configuration. It has a bass reflex enclosure for more powerful bass response. It features two aluminum cone woofers that are extremely stiff and lightweight. Each cone measures 3 1/8 inches. It is capable of extra-fast response for superior low-end reproduction. For treble, there is a single 1-inch balanced-dome tweeter. It delivers accurate high notes that reach your ears in a consistent manner.

The NS-F210 speaker does not have magnetic shielding. This allows for the use of a larger magnet which in turns helps the speaker extract maximum audio information from the source. The result is realistic effects that closely mimic the original sound.

The gadget is sold as a single unit on Amazon. To make a stereo system, you need to purchase a pair. For a multi-channel home theater system, you can team the pair with a center channel speaker and bookshelf speakers for spacious cinema-like surround sound.

The NS-F210 has a chic Yamaha black piano finish. It has a slender shape that matches most flat-panel TVs. The front is guarded by a removable grille. The back has large screw speaker terminals. At the base of each speaker is a heavy-duty round steel bass anchor speaker stand. This stand maintains the speaker’s balance and ensures it doesn’t tumble over easily.

Frequency response of the device is 50Hz to 45kHz, sensitivity is 86 dB/2.83 V/1 m and impedance is 6 ohms. Maximum input power is 120 watts and nominal input power is 40 watts.

Polk Audio Monitor 70 Series II Floor Standing Speaker :

The Monitor 70 Series II is one of the best floor standing speakers for multi-channel surround sound systems. It is built with Polk’s patented Dynamic Balance technology which studies the device’s electro-acoustic and mechanical system to know which materials should be used and what geometry should be maintained while building the speaker. This technology accurately predicts and pin points drawbacks in design and materials which might hinder speaker performance once the construction is complete. Consequently, the makers manage to avoid these less-than-optimal choices and ensure only the best design and materials are employed.

The Monitor 70 Series II speaker is equipped with one 1-inch dome tweeter and four 6 ½ inch woofers. Both the tweeter and the woofers are designed using Dynamic Balance technology. The drivers have a wide dispersion mechanism which spreads out the sound over a large area. At the bottom of the tower speaker, on the front face, is a critically tuned bass port for improving the low end response. It cuts back on distortion and extends the bass output to give you a very warm and mellow sound.

One of the biggest plus points of the speaker is that it has a very small footprint – less than one square foot. You can tuck it away in a corner of your living room and no one will even notice it’s there. It is 42 inches tall, 15.6 inches wide and 7.7 inches deep. It has a smart black oak vinyl finish with a smooth removable grille in front. A pair of 5-way binding posts at the back affords secure connections. There are four bold stabilizing feet for keeping the speaker firmly in place. They keep the speaker steady on carpets as well as hard floors.

The Monitor 70 Series II speaker is magnetically shielded which means less acoustic interference from outside. It can handle a power of up to 125 watts and work with most amplifiers and receivers. Pairing two speakers will give you stereo sound but you can also have just one speaker if the room is small. Of course, if you want to build a home theater system with multiple channels, you will need two of these speakers for the front left and right channels.

Key Features :

  • Passive floor standing speaker with Dynamic Balance technology.
  • One 1-inch dome tweeter, four 6.5 inch woofers, one tuned bass port.
  • Two 5-way binding posts, peak power 125 watts, four stabilizing feet.
  • Black oak vinyl finish, magnetic shielding, small footprint, removable grille.

Sony SS-CS3 Floor Standing Speaker :

The Sony SS-CS3 is a premium floor standing tower speaker. It is a 3-way 4-driver speaker system with a maximum power of 145 watts. It has High-Resolution Audio which captures music at a higher rate than CD. This technology ensures more audio samples per second are processed. It also increases the bitrate accuracy of each sample. The result is brilliantly clear sound with astounding details.

The SS-CS3 has a single 1-inch soft dome tweeter made of polyester fiber. This is the main tweeter. There is another super tweeter which is ¾ inches in size. The super tweeter is a wide-dispersion tweeter which expands the soundstage. It is extremely directional, meaning it sends the right sound from the right direction. The reproduction is so accurate you can even pin point the position of instruments.

Both tweeters have sound-absorbing felt for eliminating rear sound pressure. They have high sound pressure, thanks to a slew of weight reduction techniques such as integrating a powerful magnet circuit to a lighter copper-clad aluminum wire in the voice coil.

For the woofer, there are two 5.12 inch Mica Reinforced Cellular (MRC) fiber cone woofers. They have foamed mica-cellular diaphragms. They are rigid and maintain their shape over time. Designed to function at high speed and pressure these woofers belt out high-output bass for the ultimate listening experience. They also reproduce clear vocals and dialogues in the midrange frequencies with excellent clarity and detail.

The Sony SS-CS3 has premium components like air-core inductors in the tweeters and silicon steel plates in the woofer. There are high-quality film condensers and thick winding materials. The faceplate is slightly tapered at the edges to suppress edge diffraction and unwanted noise.

The speaker has a ported wooden enclosure with a black veneer finish. It has interior joints and sound absorbing materials to counter internal vibrations. The bass reflex duct and screw speaker terminal are located on the rear wall.

Frequency response of the speaker is 45Hz to 50kHz, and impedance is 6 ohms. Its dimensions (W x H x D) in inches are: 9.05 x 36.30 x 10.24. It weighs 25.35 lbs.

Key Features :

  • 3-way 4-speaker floor standing speaker system.
  • One 1-inch main tweeter, one ¾ inch super tweeter.
  • Two 5.12 inch fiber cone woofer, air cone inductors, silicon steel plates.

Definitive Technology BP-9020 Floor Standing Speaker :

The BP-9020 by Definitive Technology is a powerful bipolar floor standing speaker. It is engineered with Forward-Focused Bipolar Array (FFBP) technology. It boasts an integrated 8-inch powered subwoofer with separate volume control. It is compatible with Dolby Atmos and DTS:X surround sound codecs.

The BP-9020 uses a unique bipolar speaker technology to radiate sound in all directions. This technique makes use of not one but two driver complements, one in front and one at the back. The front array driver complement consists of one 1-inch round aluminum dome tweeter and two 3 ½ inch round midrange drivers. The rear array driver complement consists of a single 3 ½ inch round midrange driver.

At the bottom of this speaker arrangement is a massive 8-inch powered subwoofer for extended bass. It has a built-in Class D amplifier with a power rating of 150 watts. It also has its own bass volume control. The benefit of having the sub integrated with the main speakers is that the low end is seamlessly merged with the mids and highs.

The way this speaker works is that the sound from the front driver array reaches your ears first to establish clear imaging. Then the second sound wave from the rear driver array arrives at your ears offering a sense of spaciousness. This combination of two sounds reaching your ears one after the other (don’t worry, the lag is too small, your ears won’t be able to tell the difference) creates a very warm, luxurious and seamless listening experience.

The drivers are designed using Balanced Dual Surround System (BDSS) driver technology. This technology incorporates rubber surrounds on the outer as well as inner edges of each driver cone for better control and clarity. It makes the sound so precise you can pin point where a twig has snapped underfoot or where a violinist is in a church choir. Further, the tweeter has a special silk surround for smooth ultra-high notes. Thanks to this surround, the tweeter is able to touch frequencies as high as 40kHz which is rare and pretty amazing for a tower speaker.

Both the front and rear speaker enclosures are bass reflex in design. They each have an acoustically tuned vent. The front side has a cloth grille while the rear side has two sets of 5-way binding posts. At the bottom of the device is a cast aluminum removable base plate with adjustable carpet spikes and floor glides.

The subwoofer has Intelligent Bass Control. This lets you adjust the bass without disrupting the midrange tonal balance. Total frequency response of the BP-9020 is 28Hz to 40kHz, nominal impedance is 8 ohms and maximum sensitivity is 92 dB (1 watt @ 1 meter).

If you are looking for a speaker that has the ability to upgrade to Atmos height speakers, this model would be a sensible choice. Under the removable aluminum top plate is a docking port that perfectly accommodates the A90 Atmos speakers by Definitive Technology.

Dimensions of the speaker with the base plate attached are: 35.5 inches (H) x 13 inches (D) x 11 inches (W).

Role of a Floor Standing Speaker :

A floor standing speaker has many uses. It can be used a single sound system in compact rooms. It can be paired with another identical speaker to create a stereo pair for more spacious sound. It can also be used one of the two front speakers in a typical 3-, 5-, 7- (or more) channel home theater system.

In a home theater or surround sound system, the floor-standing speakers are responsible for the front soundstage. The left speaker handles the left channel sounds and the right speaker handles the right channel sounds. They provide well-defined stereo separation.  They also supplement the center channel speaker by adding more details to the soundtrack. They produce the bulk of the background score and special sound effects.

Importance of Floor Standing Speakers :

In a surround sound system, the floor standing speakers produce sounds that move in sync with the action playing out on screen. For instance, if there is an army marching from left to right, the sound of their marching also moves in tandem with the on-screen action. This creates a very realistic effect – you feel the sound physically moving from one point to another in front of you in three dimensional space.

As the cabinets are bigger, floor standing speakers have more space for housing tweeters, midrange drivers and woofers in the same unit. Even if they do not have all of these drivers, they still have dedicated tweeters for high frequencies and mid-bass drivers for midrange and bass frequencies. Plus, the drivers are bigger because of the extra space. As a result, the sound is much louder and covers a wider area.

Selecting a Floor Standing Speaker :

If the room is small, a single speaker will do. If it is large, you might need two speakers (identical). If you are building a 5-channel home theater system, you will obviously need two floor standing units for the front sound stage. In the last scenario, it is always advisable to use products of the same brand. They will likely have the same technology, design and materials which will produce a more consistent sound. If you are looking for future-proof gear, go for Atmos-ready speakers.

When is a Floor Standing Speaker Needed :

If you are trying to assemble a surround sound system for a large room with wide open space, using floor standing speakers for the front left and right channels is recommended. Bookshelf speakers might not be able to cover the entire listening area.

If the room is a dedicated media room with a large flat-screen TV, it might be a good idea to get floor standing speakers for the front stage. They will create an immersive listening experience, enveloping the listener with robust audio.

Placement of Floor Standing Speakers :

In a 5-, 7- or higher surround sound system, you want the floor standing speakers to point directly at the listening position. This position is on a couch at a comfortable distance from the TV. The tweeters must be at ear level with the listener when they are seated on the couch. You might also toe-in the two speakers, meaning you can slightly angle them towards the center of the couch. This will give you a more accurate and tight sound – the sweet spot will be right on the couch. If you choose not to do this, you will have a wider sound stage, but the sound will not be as focused on the couch. So that’s the trade off. You can decide what you want.

In any case, the ideal position for the two front speakers is between 22ᵒ-30ᵒ from the listening position. Refer the following illustration for a clear understanding.
